Parents probably call their children’s names countless times during their lives. Choosing your child’s name necessitates serious choices:

  • Names are an important factor in our identity
  • Names should be appropriate in all phases of our life cycle
  • Names should not cause us unforeseen difficult
  • Will my child be teased or judged by the name I choose?

Parents should always remember there will be pleasure and maybe even pitfalls in the name you choose.

Focus Is Important

Deciding what your focus is when choosing your baby’s name will affect its meaningfulness. Family name, ethnic connotation, ”cool” or popular names and even workability with your last name are just some of the factors parents should take into consideration. Common last names such as Smith or Jones will sometimes affect the choice of first names that parents select. The intent to set their child apart may make them lean toward a first name that is distinct and usually very unique. When parents choose a unique baby name with the intention of paying homage to an older family member the uniqueness of the name will sometimes reflect the time period of the older person. When wanting to include ethnic recognition in their name selection parents must be aware that pronunciation of the name may present difficulties to teachers, co-workers and others in life that are not familiar with the ethnic group.

It’s a Gift

Surely the choices parents must make or not easy and the more discussion and brain-storming that goes into your child’s name will reflect it’s meaningfulness. What the child will feel, experience and identify with will be with them through life so the time taken to make the right choice is one of the most important gifts you will give your child.
