There are a few methods of germinating seeds. This one is my favorite for it’s simplicity and high success rate.
Step 1: Use room temperature bottled water. Pour into a short glass or cup. Place seeds into the water. Place the cup containing the seeds and water into a cabinet or drawer. Leave the seeds alone and in darkness for 24 hours.
Step 2: Gently push any floating seeds below the surface. Leave the seeds alone and in darkness for 48 hours.
Step 3: Remove the seeds from the water on day 3. Carefully pour the water and seeds into a bowl. Your seeds should all have tap roots.
Step 4: Mix organic potting soil or seed starter soil with 50% perlite. Add in bottled water and mix thoroughly. Soil should be moist, but not soaked. If you squeeze a handful and water drips out, it’s a little too wet.
Step 5: Drill a tiny hole into the bottom of solo cups to allow for drainage.
Step 6: Fill solo cups with soil mix. Keep the soil light and airy, scoop into the cups, do not pack the soil. Seedlings need oxygen and water.
Step 7: Transplant into soil. Using a pencil, create a hole 1/4” to 1/2” deep. Place seedling root side down into the hole. Gently cover the seedlings with loose soil to protect the root from light.
Step 8: Use a spray bottle filled with bottled water to keep the soil moist (but not soaked). Use sandwich bags or plastic wrap to form a humidity dome over the solo cups. The dome is optional, but will make regulating the soil moisture easier.
Step 9: Place solo cups into a tray that can collect the water runoff.
Step 10: When your solo cup seedlings break through the soil, they should be placed under 24 hour lights (18 hours of light per day at a minimum). Nothing too bright, just enough to show the seedlings which way to grow. A low wattage CFL, LED, or even an incandescent light would be OK for this stage. Keep temperatures around 75-85 degrees.
That’s it, pretty easy huh? Your seedlings should stay in their solo cups for the next 2-3 weeks.
